Emily Yang ‘18 MFA

Emily Yang is a visual artist working in photography and video. She was born in Shanghai, China, and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. Her interests include the expanded meaning of the photograph seen through the changing contexts in which the subjects are placed. Yang often asks her subjects to pose for the camera as a means of investigating the power dynamics between the mechanical eye of the camera, the photographer, and the subject. Instead of a directly confrontational approach, she insists on picturing the subtle manifestations of relationships by using photographic framing, focus, and distortion to her advantage.
